Babas Bench
Babas Bench

Before the café culture of today’s Croatia even existed, the benches, low walls, and even simple planks held up by stones were the daily gathering spots of our traditional people. Go to any town, small or large and you will still find people gathering and sharing their time on these reliable fixtures.

Now, Croatian people love nicknames so some benches get known for the people who use them the most. This site is named for a particular bench — one that is “owned” by the grandmas of the town.

With those women in mind our mission is simple: share everything — recipes, tips, memories, jokes and wisdom, the way you do with friends and relations.

As a mother and daughter team, one born in Croatia and one who in the USA, we are the instigators, but in no way are we the voices of this project.

We started BabasBench to bring the stories and ways of our ancestors to life so we can inspire future generations to know and love their heritage because knowing your history is how you build your future.
